On the first day of Christmas, my true love gave to me
a hardtail in a gray shade.

You know where I'm going with this? You know the song, right? Alright, straight to the end then!

Ready? And sing!

On the twelfth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me
twelve bearings wearing
eleven chainrings ringing
ten brakes a squeaking
nine bottom brackets
eight forks a damping
seven spokes a spinning
six chains a lubing
five shortish stems
four dropping posts
three steel cogs
two foamy grips
and a hardtail in a gray shade

Ozmosis Training wishes you and your families a happy holiday season! We hope to see you in the New Year to make those resolutions happen, whether it to be get fit and ready for the biking season or prepare to crush some races! Give us a shout!

Less is more

It took me well over a year to choose a new bike. Mostly because my old one was a great all-mountain bike with 6 inches of front and rear suspension. I wanted something similar but in those 4 years that passed, 6-inch bikes became enduro bikes that are long, slack, and more downhill-oriented. I tried some... They were great but I wanted to be able to climb like I was used to. I didn't make a decision for a long time.

Partly because the bikes that were more similar to my old one had less suspension and tighter geomoetry. I worried that I wouldn't be as comfortable descending.

So I had to choose:
- More suspension, slacker, longer, "enduro"
- Less suspension, tighter, more trail-oriented

Hmmm... As a scientist, I had to review the data... Or my past performance.

1. I've ridden my hardtail in the bike park. Once. Because that's what I had with me that day and I ran into a group of awesome ladies who convinced me to come ride park with them in the afternoon. How could I not?! I surprised myself riding a 120 mm hardtail down Afternoon Delight. I took it slower compared to my downhill bike but I rode everything.

2. I really actually like climbing. To me, it's as much fun as the descent. Imby? I love struggling on it! ;) Good Sir Martin? Oh yes please, more of that! Big Trouble in Little Chainring? Worth climbing it twice in one day!

3. I keep it on the ground, mostly. Have I jumped or dropped things over 3-4 feet on my all-mountain bike? Nope. Do I regularly feel like I'm pushing my current all-mountain bike to its limits? Nope. Am I a charger? Nope.

My head says "try a 140 mm bike". The rest of me remained reluctant. But I finally decided and have been riding a Norco Sight now.

And guess what? My fears were unfounded. That 140 mm goes a long way! It's a modern bike, with plenty of squish. And its climbing ability is exactly what I wanted.

I'm not the only one either that's going with "less is more". A friend traded in her Rocky Mountain Slayer (160 mm front and rear) for the new Giant Advanced Trance (140 mm). An American friend rides more on his 140 mm front, 120 mm rear than anyone else, no matter what bike. And my husband, I've seen him ride his 120 mm hardtail on things I would never consider on anything but a downhill bike.

I guess I'm trying to say...
- Believe in yourself and your capabilities
- Try bikes out before you buy them
- Have fun. It's just riding bikes, after all

Just the other day my hubby planted a seed.
He said to me very seriously,
Do you know what we need?
I told him we were out of milk
And I planned to go to the store today.
But he exclaimed forgot all that!
We need to go on a foray!
A foray? Like an adventure you mean?
Yes, exactly like that, he yelled.
Grab your bike, helmet, and tent,
I'll get maps, the GPS, the handheld.

I jumped into action, excited by his decision.
This was just perfect!
I imaged it all in a vision
Of a trip way up North.
We could ride and ride for hours,
explore new peaks and  mountains,
ride through valleys laden with flowers.
I already mused of quiet nights,
Thousands of stars far above,
While peacefully camping
With no work or jobs to think of.

Once everything was loaded in
We headed north for a few days.
If only we anticipated the rains would begin.
The skies turned black before we knew it.
Water droplets fell hard on the windshield.
The road became impossible to navigate.
In the distance, a hut was revealed
And we decided to shelter over there.
Onto a forest road we directed the truck
But with all that rain in the last hour,
It soon got stuck in the muck.

We jumped out and grabbed our packs.
The food, the water, the bicycles too,
And biked quickly through the sloppy tracks.
The hut was meager but good enough.
We spent the night cold and huddled,
Temperatures dropped and snow fell.
A little campfire stayed alive yet struggled
Until dawn broke and the sun rose high.
Warm coffee made us alert,
Oatmeal revived our empty bellies,
And we soon put thread to dirt.

We then discovered a singletrack trailhead
Quickly dropped our posts
Ready to go down and shred
Berms, rolls, jumps, and ladders
Whoops and laughter made us forget
The cold wet night just hours before
Although unplanned, we have to admit:
This was exactly what we needed.
Our luck may have been out of our hand,
But we returned with smiles on our faces.
It's only an epic if nothing goes as planned!
